Five Marks of Mission
Back in 1984 the Anglican Communion - so that’s Anglicans right across the globe tried to pin down what our participation in God’s mission (missio dei) might actually look like in practice. They eventually came to the so called ‘Five Marks of Mission’ which, initially, remind us that:
The mission of the Church is the mission of Christ:
And then breaks it down into five elements:
1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
2. To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
3. To respond to human need by loving service
4. To transform unjust structures of society, to challenge violence of every kind and pursue peace and reconciliation
5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth
Some time later, these five marks were summarised to the rather more memorable: Tell, Teach, Tend, Transform and Treasure.
